India’s Covid-19 crisis has dwarfed nearly every other country’s statistics. However high these numbers seem, the reality is that they are far worse due to undercounting. The most pressing issue in India is oxygen. What’s puzzling about the oxygen shortage is this paradox: oxygen is available but not accessible. I spoke to a scientist on the ground who’s working to close this gap in real time.

As a physician in the Covid-19 era, I’ve been thinking a lot about resilience & burnout. We’re told that resilience & burnout are on two sides of the productivity spectrum: resilient people don’t experience burnout and those who do likely aren’t that resilient. This narrative isn’t just dangerous, it’s scientifically untrue. We can be incredibly resilient & still experience burnout. The upheaval of 2020 continues into 2021 in new ways, but it doesn’t need to unmoor us from our journey towards resilience. This past year has been our greatest teacher, an immersive masterclass in resilience, and we can use these same skills to find our emotional bearings during this new year. This universal resilience prescription is one we can all apply in the here and now, especially during the pandemic. When we learn to live a lifetime in a day, we redefine our relationship with time, our greatest and most cherished currency of all.
